FL Studio 12 – what’s new and better
FL Studio 12 was officially released in April 2015 . Here’s what has improved in Image Line’s latest offering.
Having had a little play with FL Studio 12, here are some thoughts and the main improvements over previous versions.
Firstly, it has a reworked user interface that is now vector-based, allowing smooth scaling to any screen size or resolution you use. It looks a lot better. It will also happily scale up to monitors offering up to 8K in resolution with no loss in quality. There is better plugin compatibility and stability for 32-bit and 64-bit VST plug-ins. Something I’ve had issues with previously. It can also scan unlimited locations for plugins now.
Multi-touch control has been extended and also added to the mixer, which itself has been re-designed. You can for example re-size elements to adjust for the size of your fingers. There’s lots of ways to use FL Studio 12 with touch screen monitors. You could have the mixer on a touch screen and use it much like a hardware controller. Awesome!
There are also various layout options for the DAW to suit a variety of workflows.
So here’s a rundown of the main improvements and ones that I like in particular:
- Fully reworked, scalable user interface.
- Multi-touch extended to the Mixer. This is a godsend, and saves me a lot of clicks!
- Browser improvements. Category tabs and delete content within it. You can right-click and delete content straight from it.
- Channel Menu. Channel Options move from the Toolbar Menus to the Channel rack.
- Channel settings integrated into the Plugin Wrapper
- Pattern Menu moved from the Channel rack to Toolbar Menu and Pattern Selector.
- Piano roll updated. Auto-zoom can be deselected from the Settings > General > Auto zoom when in Piano Roll
- Playlist. Multiple drag and drop of audio files from Windows Explorer
- VST Plugins installation and compatibility improved
